Why You Can't Skip Magnesium if You're Taking Vitamin D
If you find yourself wondering, “Am I taking enough Vitamin D?” you should also ask yourself whether you’re getting enough magnesium.
In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that individuals with high levels of magnesium intake, whether from dietary sources or taking supplements, were less likely to have low levels of vitamin D. A randomized trial indicates that magnesium optimizes vitamin D status, raising it in people with deficient levels and lowering it in people with high levels. The trial also revealed something new — that magnesium had a regulating effect in people with high vitamin D levels. The research provides the first evidence that magnesium may play an important role in optimizing vitamin D levels and preventing conditions related to vitamin D levels.
Simply stated, the study suggests that getting the right amount of magnesium is important to allow the body to regulate vitamin D levels.
